The Orange County Museum of Art has embarked on a dramatic physical expansion and programmatic transformation with a new museum, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne of Culver City-based Morphosis, set to open in 2021. The vision of the stunning new building and its campus will reflect Southern California as the nexus of diverse communities, cultures and interests. The Deputy Director will build upon OCMA’s unique vision of contemporary art and Southern Californian culture by overseeing the day to day running of a temporary space that will excite the community with its diverse mix of exhibitions and programs while the new museum is being built.
The original museum was opened in 1962 as the Balboa Pavilion Gallery, became known as the Newport Harbor Art Museum in 1968, and moved to its current location on San Clemente Drive in 1977. Twenty years later, the museum was remodeled and renamed the Orange County Museum of Art, and is the premier visual arts organization in Orange County.
OCMA is an innovative leader in presenting fresh voices of contemporary art, primarily from Southern California, with a collection that comprises nearly 4,000 objects of modern and contemporary art that includes painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, video, digital, and installation art produced during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. OCMA exhibitions have been presented by over 40 institutions worldwide, and its collections were experienced by over 1.2 million people in 2016 alone. The Orange County Museum of Art has an annual budget of $3.5m, a 26-member Board, 12 staff, roughly 350 volunteers (65 of which are docents). The endowment amounts to about $14 million.
