ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR of AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

The Broad is searching for an associate director of audience engagement to draw a broad range of visitors to the museum and engage the public in an active dialogue with contemporary art, artists and thinkers.

Presenting one of world’s leading collections of modern and contemporary art, The Broad is a physical manifestation of the ideas and ideals that prompted the Founders to build one of today’s foremost collections of contemporary art. Conceived by Eli and Edythe Broad and designed by world-renowned architects Diller Scofidio + Renfo, the new museum, along with The Broad Collections, highlights the importance to our society of art and creators, unconventional thinking and disciplined action, individual initiative and community engagement.

The museum will comprise 120,000 square feet across three floors, including approximately 50,000 square feet of gallery space on two floors, a lecture hall for up to 200 people, and a public lobby with display space and a museum shop. The Broad will provide a state-of-the-art archive, study facilities and art storage space for scholars and curators wishing to research works in the collection, and will also house The Broad Art Foundation, known for its worldwide lending program of works from the collection.

The museum’s exhibitions and programming will focus on the artists and art of the renowned contemporary art collections of Eli and Edythe Broad, which contain nearly 2,000 works by more than 200 artists. This includes unparalleled, in-depth groupings of works by select artists such as Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Jean-Michel Basquiat and many others. It is contemplated that The Broad will collaborate with other contemporary art curators and their institutions in this endeavor.

The associate director of audience engagement will attract first time and repeat visitors of diverse ages, ethnicities, religions, genders, interests and economic means to The Broad and help to establish this new institution as a place that advances ideas conceived by some of the best artists of the late 20th and early 21st century. This person must have a keen appreciation of the visual arts, the creative process, artists, and unconventional thinking that engages, entertains and informs, combined with a strong practical streak and an ability to get things done.

The single most important indicator of success for the associate director of audience engagement is robust attendance to public programs and other events staged at The Broad.

The associate director of audience engagement must have a broad understanding of contemporary art, popular culture and contemporary artists, combined with a firm grounding in audience engagement. They must be resourceful and innovative in their thinking, aware of current technologies as well as current thinking in marketing/audience engagement and how to selectively deploy programs likely to fulfill institutional goals programs and practices. This role requires the capacity to conceive great original programs, work with other thought-leaders to bring their programs to The Broad, and an ability to build awareness of the museum and transform different constituencies into active visitors.
