American Foundation for the Blind is the leading advocate for 32 million people who are blind or visually impaired. The CEO will lead a Board and staff team that creates a world without limits for people who are blind or visually impaired, in the process shaping policies and delivering programs that promote societal change, remove barriers and ensure inclusion.

The key objectives of the President & CEO is to measurably shift perspectives, policies and practices across society so that those with vision loss can fully participate in our economy and civil society at all levels.  CEO responsibilities include management and strengthening of AFB’s staff, asset base, advocacy, programs, finances and fundraising, and delivery of data, research, education, employment and digital inclusion services that support those who are blind or have low vision. The President should ideally have a strong business, financial management and fundraising track record, combined with the lived experience of a person who understands the realities of living with blindness.

AFB was founded in 1921 and serves all Americans with vision loss. Helen Keller, the internationally renowned advocate, author and activist, who herself was deaf-blind, joined the organization in 1924 and with AFB paved the way for significant social change in America and internationally. The organization is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, has a Board of 16 and staff of 50 located throughout the country (over half of whom are blind, have low vision, or have other disabilities), an operating budget of $7.5 million and investments of $25 million that includes a restricted endowment of $11 million.
