San Francisco, CA

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

m/Oppenheim Associates is assisting San Francisco Ballet in the search for an innovative Director of Development to reimagine and implement an aggressive, data-driven contributed revenue program. For more information, please review the complete position description.

Under the direction of Helgi Tomasson since 1985, San Francisco Ballet has achieved an international reputation as one of the preeminent ballet companies in the world. Boasting a lively and artistically vital ensemble, the company performed the first American productions of Swan Lake and Nutcracker, the first 20th-century American production of Coppélia, and in 2017, the North American premiere of Frankenstein, a co-production with London’s Royal Ballet. By commissioning new works by some of today’s most sought-after choreographers, helping young talent to evolve and mature, acquiring existing works by master choreographers, and introducing new interpretations of classic full-length productions, Tomasson has created a sophisticated, diverse, international repertory that offers powerful and entertaining dance performance that engages audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

The current annual operating budget is $50M, with approximately $18M received from contributed revenue. Central to the Ballet’s goals for 2016-2021 is to recalibrate and approach contributed revenue very differently. Leveraging the assets and current constituencies of the Ballet, technology, big-data analytics, and non-traditional channels of communication favored by new audiences and younger patrons of dance, the Director will create programs and giving opportunities that deeply engage both current and new audiences in significantly increasing contributed revenue.

The Director have substantial fundraising experience within a high-performing institution or equivalent experience as a board member, will be an extrovert who gets energy from connecting with individuals, aligning the case for support and creating opportunities for engagement, and will have the social grace to steward high-touch donor relationships.
