The idea for Baker Places can be directly traced to the early 1960’s and San Francisco’s unique take on the civil rights and free speech movements, which emphasized the rights, freedoms and limitless possibilities of all individuals. Eventually this same lens was applied to the mentally ill, many of whom had been cast aside and forgotten in large institutional settings where social control trumped real treatment.

Five decades later, Baker Places has expanded to become a well respected provider of comprehensive care for people in need across San Francisco. Its services run the spectrum from crisis residential treatment for mental health and addiction issues, to peer-supported permanent housing. Operating 11 programs at sites distributed throughout the City, Baker Places has also collaborated with other agencies to design, develop, staff and spin off offsite programs. The organization’s diverse staff serves an equally diverse population in terms of ethnicity, cultural background and diagnosis.
