Museum of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Los Angeles, CA

MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR ADVANCEMENT

m/Oppenheim Associates is assisting the Museum of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in the search for the Managing Director for Advancement for the new Academy Museum in Los Angeles. This leader will be a key member of the management team, shape significant capital & endowment campaigns, drive annual contributed revenue, and intimately engage prominent donors in the United States and internationally in support of a museum dedicated to the past, present and future of the motion picture arts.

The museum will be housed in the restored and renovated Wilshire May Company building, and will include a distinctive spherical addition designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. The building is located next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art within Museum Row of the Miracle Mile District near several other museums, and is perfectly positioned to draw tourists, cinema enthusiasts and the general public into an experience of motion pictures that no other museum in the world can provide. Upon opening in late 2018, the Academy Museum will instantly become the world’s premier institution devoted to the art and science of movies and moviemaking.

Through exciting exhibitions and engaging public programs, visitors will be able to explore the arts and sciences that have made motion pictures our most innovative and influential art form for more than a century. The building itself provides an outstanding platform for celebrating the rich history of Hollywood and global filmmaking, with 6 stories of immersive exhibition galleries, a state-of-the-art educational studio and two state-of-the-art film and performance theaters, and dynamic public and special event spaces (please see the Academy Museum Fact Sheet for more information). The Academy’s unparalleled permanent collections contain more than 13 million photographs, 190,000 film and video assets, 80,000 screenplays, 50,000 posters, and 20,000 production and costume design drawings. The collection also includes more than 1,400 special collections of film legends such as Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, and John Huston. A summary of the various collections of the Academy can be found here, and much of the collections have never before been made available to the general public.

This entrepreneurial, innovate, high-profile institution desires a master fundraiser who can leverage the Academy’s internationally recognized brand for institutional advancement using conventional solicitation, business sponsorship, event-based and modern mass social media fundraising approaches. Your suggestions and nominations are most welcome, and feel free to distribute this note and the position description as you deem appropriate. We are seeking a leader of imagination and drive. While we expect to engage fundraising professionals with a strong museum background, this search is certainly not restricted to only those that have served museums.
